Congrats Radu - I thought your design was the best as well. Very polished and professional without being pretentious. I'd also like to say congratulations to everyone else, there were many good entries and everyone should be commended for the effort they put into this worth cause. So, is there any chance that the W3C will actually use Radu's (or anyone else's) design?

That's cool :) Congratulations to Radu, whose design I thought was pretty damned sweet. I'd like to say a big cheers to the judges, whose work has been (certainly for me) a big source of inspiration - without the likes of you, I'd probably still be creating boring cack with tables and font tags...

To everybody involved, thanks for this great contest! Just a small question, because:
  • I am curious (and maybe other people, too)
  • this is a good opportunity to get some better understanding of how to use web standards
Would it be possible to get an overview of the average rating of the criteria per entry? It's a lot of work (12 average ratings for 25 entries), but I think it would be cool. Just an idea.

Nate, will we be able to see the judges' ratings of our work?

Andreas: I'm asking the other judges if they are open to the idea of sharing some of the summary details. Unfortunately, if even one judge objects, I will need to hold onto the information because when I setup the contest and invited the judges, I specifically insured a high level of anonymity as to the individual ratings. Also we need to take all the contestants into consideration, some of whom may not be as pleased to have even their summary scores released. So, I'll add an update here when I know more, but I'd have to suggest that the answer to your question is leading towards no.

Yeah, I think the entrants (myself) should be able to see how we ranked. After such agony and ongoing suspense as to the release of a winner.

I see. Well, it's just because we'd have the opportunity here to compare different designs and markup for the same content. I agree with you on not showing who said what about which design, but I think giving the average ratings about each design might be interesting. But, as I said: just an idea.

I would find it very helpful if there was feedback on my entry.

I find it very interesting tht you've chosen a winning design that has obvious problems with style show-up in IE6/Win. How should I interpret that? That the next redesign will be 100% XHTML 2.0 and work in no real-life browsers whatsoever? I feel sorry for the top-notched, I think they've hit the ceiling a few times to much.

sarcosos: of course IE6 is a real-life browser, but it has lacks. why should everyone write css-as-usual, just because IE/win can't understand it? or should we better go back to those tags? i couldn't find any lack in my css that causes that problem, and that was annoying enough... there are much more browsers on the market that understand css, some other platforms as well. is it a choise? the css-show must (and should) go on. sometime, IE6/Win will be as overhauled as NN4 today. besides, the W3C site is NOT a real-life site; it should improve the quality of our real-life browsing, but perhaps this requires some NN4-victims, or IE/Win as well...

I am just plain tired of trying to get things to work in IE 6. I am ready to move on to new things that are supported in Mozilla, Opera, and other browsers.

Radu, try adding position:relative to the #centercont part in alt1_main.css. Bye bye glitch in IE6/Win. :) I agree with you about IE6. It lacks in correct css support. For this contest, I dealt with it by first writing css rules that IE6 likes (!) - afterwards, I checked in Mozilla and Opera, and made use of css2 selectors (that IE6 doesn't support) for tweaking some css-values, so that Mozilla and Opera like the stylesheet, too. Check out my stylesheet if this doesn't make sense. Is this a good strategy? I don't know. But it is more practical than designing first for Mozilla or Opera and afterwards spend hours making your css edible for a capricious IE6.

andreas, that's the second time that you have such a simple solution for my css-problems. well, thanks! i did not designed first for opera or mozilla, but for all those browser that should understand it; IE6 as well...

Definately, radu, but it is widely used whatever we say and it's most likely not going to go away 'til Microsoft decides to catch up (5 years?). [I somewhat agree that the W3C is a special case, however.] Works now anyways; it wasn't you're fault I'm sure.

Radu I think you did a great job but I agree with those who say that a perfect design shouldn't have problems with IE6. Of course it does have lacks but it's a real-life browser, and quite a lot of people have it. It's just a problem that we're to solve if we are professionals. What makes me happy for you is that you're open and ready to grow (it seems so). Good luck!
